Im sure this is a stoopid question but as I have never dabbled in wireless conectivity i am not sure. we have a wired router and am thinking about buying my son a laptop with wireless built in.
will it work with a wired router via a dongle or suchlike or is it useless without a wireless router?
thanks.

You will need a wireless router. Is your current one wireless but its just that the PC is connected to it with a cable or is it not a wireless one at all?
all modern laptops have a wired network port on them so you can use them wired with a router if you want, no need for a dongle.

A wireless laptop has both wired and wireless connectivity, so you can use it either way.

A wired router (that you seem to have) will only work with this laptop via a wire.

If you replace your existing wired router with a wireless router then the router will work with wired or wireless.

So once you get a wireless router your sons laptop can connect to it wired or wirelessly, and you wont need to buy anything extra for the laptop.
