what is this small white box thing near my cursor...

it seems to have just appeared over the last week or so, when i hover over an image on the computer (eg the answerbank logo above, or the advert for eurotunnel above), a little white box with nothing in it appears just below my cursor.

Presumably you're using Firefox. Normally when you hover over an image, you see a little box which displays the alternative text attribute. There seems to be a bug in the latest version of Firefox, causing it to show a tiny empty box instead.
