Hi all

I have an Orange account (Wanadoo) with webmail that I access via Mozilla Thunderbird and the settings forward the mail automatically to me. However, when I am somewhere else accessing a wireless router (eg my fathers - Tiscali - or my father in law's - BT Home Hub) it will not allow me to receive the mail.

What settings do I need to change in Thunderbird to access the account remotely. I'm off to Scotland soon where f-in-l lives and need to keep in contact with my mail for the week.

Thanks!

You have totally contradicted yourself in the first line of your question.

you say it's webmail, and then say you use Thunderbird to access it!

anyhow, just use the webmail, you can access it anywhere, log in here

Thanks Chuck. Although it IS webmail, when it's forwarded automatically to my Thunderbird account, it deletes from the webmail inbox, which is therefore always empty - hence I can't access it as I would a hotmail account! Does this make more sense ...?
Is Thunderbird set up to access via POP or IMAP?

You want to use IMAP.
or just don't use Thunderbird while your away, any new email will stay in your webmail until you first use Thunderbird to collect it when you return.

Hi - It's POP. pop.orange.co.uk
POP means the mail is stored on oranges servers until you collect it using Thunderbird, then it's deleted and the only copy that remains is your Thunderbird copy on your computer. so as long as thunderbird isn't collecting the mail (which it won't unless you use it) your new mail will be available via webmail when your away, but old stuff already "deleted" by thunderbird won't be

IMAP keeps the mail on oranges servers and just makes a copy in your thunderbird, so if you want to use webmail at any time all your mail is still there.

orange doesn't seem to support IMAP (huh? but I can't find anything other than pop for them) so your stuck with POP!

Great, Chuck - thanks! That all makes sense. So if I don't open Thunderbird it will stay on the server and I'll use it via the Orange mail facility. Many thanks!
