Can anyone advise me? I have set up an old desktop with Ubuntu successfully but it does not recognise my edimax wireless dongle (ew-7718).
Can anyone explain a relatively idiot-proof way of persuading ubuntu to do this? Tried all the help FAQs to no avail.

Well, it might not be supported under Linux, and that's that.

I'd recommend you ask at the Ubuntu Forums.

I've had a go at the forums but they are sometimes hard to follow.
Try asking in the absolute beginners section, and let them know that you're new to this stuff. Give it a day for answers, and hopefully someone will reply.
