Heading out to Florida soon and wondered if I bought my daughter a new mobile would it work in UK with her pay as you go O2 sim?

Depends on the phone.

In europe we use GSM as the standard, together with 3G technologies like HSPDA, and 2.5G stuff like EDGE.

Check what the handset supports. If it says 'quadband GSM' or something like that, it should be ok.
