Installed SP3, running Norton, then problems, need help...

I installed Windows Service Pack 3, then ran Norton. About half way through running Norton, the screen went all gobady gook, just faint lines all over it. Had to crash pc, no choice. Thought if I tried to do a system restore and (get rid of SP3) all would be ok. Choices of dates highlighted to restore were:- either software distribution service or system checkpoint. Tried all dates and it will not restore. Please can anybody help me.
