I went into my local supermarket yesterday and due to them moving a certain item from where they are generally shelved, I had to ask for assistance.

The first member of staff I asked, could not understand my request, because he could not speak English. I then asked another staff menber, in a different area of the store, you've guessed it, he also could not speak English.

Surely the need to speak the language should be the firsty qualification needed when attending an interview for a job where one deals with the public?

I persume that if an indigenous person had attended the same interview, he or she would have been asked the usual questions, what qualifications had they attained etc. Their general ability to answer the interviewer's questions would have also been essential, I would have thought.

It makes one wonder therefore, if foreign applicants are given preference over our own job seekers?

my nephew went for a job at a major high street food store at their national distrubution centre based in our area.he is white and english.he filled in his application form and attended an interview only to be told he was not ''culturally acceptable'' .....I KID YOU NOT....
Whenever I go to coffee shops or restaurants in Surrey or London, and all the staff are always Eastern European, although they all seem to be able to understand me and are perfectly polite, I wonder .... where do all the English people find work nowadays ... and do they really want to work or would they rather be on the dole ? I am sure i will open a can of works here ...
I saw a couple in asda ask an assistant where the sugar was and the assistant couldnt understand them - the couple spoke very clearly ... whats going on when this sort of thing is becoming the norm?
What nonsense.

Why on earth would any employer "prefer" someone that could not sell the product.

It does not make any businesss sense whatsover.

What does make sense is to fill your vacancies with as poorly paid staff as you can, espeically if keeping wage costs are mor important to you than customer service.

My advice is simply to shop somewhere else.
DANCUNIAN that is the point of this post because that is EXACTLY what is happening...shops employing immigrants, paying them national minimum wages and to hell with the consequences and to hell with customer service.

newsdesk you ask the question that every true englishman is asking ''what has happened to our great country'' well the answer is we dont have a great country any more.....we are awash with immigrants illegal or otherwise that are swamping our very way of life...we are expected to accept their cultures, languages and ideals....WE HAVE LOST THE BRITISH IDENTITY FOREVER.................
Y'all know I'm pro-immigration, but I must confess I do find it frustrating when I'm served by someone who can't speak English.

I presume though that most of them that can't would be an education course of some kind to learn the language (though I can't back this up, it just seems logical).

I'm not convinced it's 'preferential treatment' though. A hell of a lot of low-level jobs like these (particularly first-time jobs, and among everyone) are got if you know someone who already works there or who can get you a job. Anyone who's gone jobhunting can vouch for this. My guess would be plenty of them have either family or close friends who give them a hand.

Also, it's very melodramatic to claim we've 'lost the British identity' - that is, if you define shelf-stacking as part of the British identity.
Its going to get worse. With Harriet Harmans plan women will take preference over men for a job, and blacks will get preference over both.
stoke - can you tell me what the British Identity is please?
oneyevic when, you cant go into a shop and get directed as patriciah says to a bag of sugar because the assistant cant speak english then its time to pack in really isnt it?dont worry you will soon be awaking to the calls of the head muslim cleric yelling at the top of his voice calling all the congregation to your local mosque, instead of the sound of church bells....will you be happy then?
I am happy enough now thanks. You are the one that seems to be unhappy. You keep going on about unBritishness etc etc. Just wondering what you think Britishness is?

Is a chicken tikka massala British?
What about teenage pregnancy?
Getting drunk on a Friday / Saturday night?
How about becoming obese?

Is this the fault of the Muslims to?
i think britishness is being able to express your opinions on immigrants without the fear of being called racist thats called the freedom of speech and democracy, which thousands of troops died for in ww1 and ww2,being able to fly the union jack in public without the pc brigade jumping up and down....we have embraced multi culturism into our country and now it is too late because we have less and less rights in our own land......so tell me oneyevic how DO YOU PERCIEVE BRITISHNESS.....A SEA OF TURBANS AND THE DISTINCT WHIFF OF CURRY?
The main reason that some supermarkets are prepared to employ immigrants with a dodgy command of English is quite simple. Apart from the obvious minimum wage issue - they will be employed as temporary or part-time employees, therefore avoiding any serious employment legislation or pension commitments. Do not underestimate the cynical hard-nosed view that the supermarkets take - after all, every little helps.

i'll tell you what it isnt

it isnt seeing our high streets and cities full of blacks and asians, it isnt watching us being represented more and more in international and national sports by blacks and asians, it isnt thinking youve had a stroke of luck because you heard your native tongue spoken in a local store.

seeing africans with 3/4/5 kids and one on the way, not even speaking english to them

being told to respect other cultures and religions whilst those of my native country are being undermined, destroyed and taken on a daily basis

thats just for starters, if you still dont understand then i suggest you take your blinkers off

at last 2 people on here with some sense well said maxi2 and bazwillrun.............................
This country has had immigration of one sort or another for hundreds of years, and it has not been detrimental to us because the numbers have been small and easily absorbed. The vast majority of them have mixed in and got on with things. Until recently that is

Our problems started when we allowed mass immigration , which in itself was started when Idi amin kicked out the Asian and we allowed them to come here.

Once they realised what a wonderful benefits system we had and how easy it was to fiddle it they started getting their families in from the asian sub continent, thousands were coming here every week.

All these so called penniless asians, how do you think they got the money to start their businesses ?

at roughyl the same time the blacks saw what was going on and decided to jump on the bandwagon, and its gone unnabated since then, with the africans also getting in on the act.

africans saw what the asians were up to saw how easy it was to fiddle the housing benefits system and turned it into an art form

we have allowed these peple to swamp us, they have higher birth rates, and are overunning us. Collectively they are destroying this country

and now the ultimate insult harriett harman has said that in a tie for a job between a white and a black the black should be given the job.

unfortunately most of you lefties hate the truth and wont realise whats happening until its too late, and for those that do see it and condone it, then you are nothing but traitors to your country

This isn't a new phenomenon. Brits have feared immigrants for decades. The difference now is that white Britons aren't able to act on their prejudices in the way that they did in the past.

To the point of the original post...here goes: all big businesses have one major cost in common - staff. They will do their utmost to reduce this overhead as much as they can (outsourced IT departments, automated call centres etc).

If they can source shelf stackers for the minimum wage they will do so.

All the supermarkets (for example) have identified the Internet shopping as their greatest (new) revenue stream. I'd expect greater emphasis to be directed to this 'buying portal' in future.

As for blacks and women 'taking over the country', well, why not? It would appear from many of the threads lately that white men have made a pig's ear of Britain over the past few decades...perhaps it's time to call up the second XI?
thats called the freedom of speech we don't have freedom of speech in this country and haven't had to my knowledge. If you don't believe me try going up to a policeman and calling him a **** or going into a crowded area and shouting 'bomb'.

thousands of troops died for in ww1 and ww2
troops died in WW2 to fight against the Nazis - who persecuted people due to their race and religion. Most members of the Nazi party had the same view of Jews that you seem to have of Muslims.

being able to fly the union jack in public without the pc brigade jumping up and down
As mentioned previously, there are plenty of St Georges Flags flying in my area (one put up recently by the council). Have you had a court order to take yours taken down?

I see Britishness as standing up for what is right, for supporting the underdog and for trying your best.

I certainly don't see it as a sea of turbans, but I do see turbans in the crowd.

bazwillrun i'll tell you what it isnt - that wasn't the question was it?

being told to respect other cultures and religions whilst those of my native country are being undermined, destroyed and taken on a daily basis

Which particular culture or religion is being 'undermined, destroyed and taken' in Britain?

Have they destroyed churches? What about art galleries? Is there a big increase of 'Beatle deniers'?
bazwillrun - Idi Amin came to power in 1971 - when was your heros speech about the 'rivers of blood'? 1968
