I have seen a website I like the look of and would like to find out who built it.

How do I go about this?

how about contacting the people whos site it is?
Is there no small print at the bottom of the page? If not I agree with kujawski, just get in touch and ask them :)

Gee whiz, that was a quick response.

I was hoping I wouldn't have to ask as the site owners may see me as a competitor but, as there's no small print, this may be my only option.

Thanks and any further suggestions welcome.
The more unscrupulous amongst us would probably just nick it, tweak it a little then pass it off as their own.
Or you could click View/Page Source. Some designers record it as a comment near the top of the page

Don't rip-off the template. Beside it being unscrupulous, some now put codes in their script and unless you are very familiar with java script you won't notice. Ofcourse, if you're that familiar with script you wouldn't need to steal it. Even if there is no copyright sign on the site, it still applies.

Play fair and ask, most are happy to oblige. And acknowledge their work in your code if you use theirs.

if you go to any decent web designer and show them the site they should be able to replicate it fairly closely without resorting to actually "borrowing" the scripts from another page.
