I've suddenly noticed a little "g" type squiggle appearing in front of the www/google.co.uk address on my task bar. Is this something I should be worried about in terms of security or is it just an update of the Google address? (Perhaps it's been there for ages and I'm just unobservant.) Does it appear for anybody else?

It is nothing to worry about.

I think they may have changed the "G" recently from one design to another because I just noticed it.

Every web site can have their own icon or logo.

If you display your favorites menu you will see that most web sites have some sort of icon or logo on the left of their name.
I think your answer "Perhaps it's been there for ages and I'm just unobservant" is the correct one,

it's nothing to worry about it just a little page icon that a lot of sites use, if you look up there right now you will see the answerbank logo.
It's called a favicon, and it has recently changed.

It used to be a capital G.
