I have a Belkin G router. Windows XP and Virgin broadband with 2 mb. I have set up the router so another user in the house can use broadband, but since its been set up, I cannot download any music or videos or watch programmes and neither can he. Well you can watch until half way through then it cuts off. If I unplug it, the broadband works fine. Have I got the wrong thing? do I need to change anything? Help....

Belkin G F5D7230 - Router and yes virgin cable broadband.
Well you have the right router, which is a start.

Have a look at the router settings (192.168.0.1 usually) and try turning the router firewall off, if it has one.

Both your pcs should have their own firewalls so this should not be a worry.

See if it makes any difference.

I think the setting I have is 192.168.0.1 (I think - not really sue where to look, I found that on the connection in control panel). Have turned of firewalls, which have to say worries me, but still no change in speed.
What speed are you getting?

You should be getting 54.0 Mbps

I only intended you switch off the router in the firewall, not the firewall on your pc.
Question Author
The speed is only coming through about 1.77 mb (I just did a broadband speed test). I have great problems finding the connection to turn off the firewall. I just turned off the one at my connection on the control panel. Thanks Ethel for helping me here, I've come to the end of knowing where to go.
pepperpot - the broadband speed test is your internet speed.

The connection speed between router and pc is different.

You should have a wifi icon by the clock bottom right of the screen. A sort of tv with )) alongside. Hover over that for the connection speed and signal strength.

Oops sorry, dozy person here! ;-)
ok it is 400 mbps.
Question Author
Right Ethel, I have checked, the two TV screen 1394 connection says I have 400 mbps and it is connected but if I click it open there's no activity going on, there is also another connection the local area connection that does have activity going on and says 100 mbps speed. Does that make sense? is that correct?
-- answer removed --
That makes perfect sense. 100 Mbps is the wired connection between your modem and router, exactly as mine is.

Your computers are not connecting to the internet properly - possibly firewall issues.

Somewhere on your router will be a reset button - sometimes recessed so a pin is needed to hold the button down for 10 seconds or so. Reset and see if that makes a difference.

I suggest you start again, following the instructions exactly.
