Spam - Give up and abandon?

I've had the same email for many years and am loath to give it up. I'm now getting about 150 spams a day and the spam directory needs checking in case the filter has misidentified an important email.

I want to keep it but is it a lost cause? The number of spams just seems to increase.

If so can anyone recommend a good email provider that they have used ( not hotmail - tried it and was not impressed )?

Gmail works great. Their spam filter is particularly good.

If you want to use a desktop application for your email, then I can recommend Thunderbird. It contains a good bayesian spam filter, meaning that it learns as you report spam so that it gets better.

I use Thunderbird daily, and find that I get one false positive (email it thinks is spam but isn't) every 6 months or so. I have a very public email address, and get about 200 spam emails a day.

What email service do you use? If your email server has its own spam filter, like SpamAssassin, you can tell Thunderbird to check for this too, so that your mail gets filtered twice (I also do this).
