Further to recent discussion After wasting time trying all manner of ways I have today managed to access my old netscape mail after going (very reluctantly) to aol.com. Have followed instructions to download via Thunderbird not quite there yet but will persevere as it says it can be done
cheers

OK. You'll probably want to look for something saying POP access on the website, which will let you use Thunderbird as your email client.

Thanks but netscape uses IMAP which Thunderbird says is Ok but it seems a bit more complicated than POP3
Really? That's pretty cool. Most web-based email systems that I've used offer POP but not IMAP. I use IMAP myself, because it suits my needs more than POP. Both should be just as easy to setup though.
