To clarify the question I asked earlier this is the official answer from the FR site:

"How do I know if my message was sent successfully?

Please click on the 'Sent Items' link located under the 'Your Messages' link to the top left of the website.

Now that all messages are kept within the Friends Reunited site, all message sent arrive instantly to your Friends Reunited inbox."

So this is the theory, don't know if it works like this in practice.
