Quite often booking directly will give the best deal.

This week I saved £30 by calling and booking rather than making an Internet booking.

I've just checked my favourite site for budget bookings. I've been coming up with prices from under £20 pppn for two or more people and under £25 pppn for singles. (There are lots of places to choose from as well, mainly with very good reviews):

NB: Please don't be put off by the word 'hostel' in that URL. You can use the search options to de-select 'Hostels' and simply search for 'Bed & Breakfasts' and 'Hotels' instead. The prices I've mentioned were achieved by doing exactly that.
