I am looking for a half decent anti virus software that won't cost the earth. I have cancelled my Norton as it was getting quite expensive.
Can anyone recommend an alternative.
I see that AVG download is free but there must be a catch.

some people on here recommend this. I am still using Norton.
Note PC security is much more than just anti-virus.
Iv'e used Microsoft Essentials ( free ) for a long time now - without any problems
Microsoft essentials seems to be good. I have just started using it.
AVG free is OK

Avast free is OK (I use it on all my machines)

MSE is free and highly regarded

No need to pay if you have a standard domestic system.
Plus the free version of Zone Alarm
As well as anti-virus you should run a malware detection/removal scan at regular intervals.

Malwarebytes is my favourite

I should have said - ' Plus the free version of Zone Alarm, for my firewall '
Microsoft Security Essentials is the *only* free security system that I recommend.
I personally found AVG slowed my laptop down, have had Avast Free Edition on it for the past year at least and have had no problems at all.
"Microsoft Security Essentials is the *only* free security system that I recommend."

Same here.
Remind me - why do these companies make available free version of their software to the masses ?
There's no catch, unless you count having to search for the right download link while they push their trial of the pay for one at you. I used to use it. Presently use Kaspersky.
They make it available to get a goodwill increase and their name known if you opt to pay for extra facilities later.
I feel sure someone will correct me if I am wrong.

Get MSE and you will Not need Zone Alarms as a Firewall because Windows inbuilt one is satisfactory.

ive had no probs for years using COMODO security suite ,free
If you use online banking, your bank may provide you with free security- I have Kaspersky free from Barclays.
>>>why do these companies make available free version of their software to the masses ?

Look at the way AVG and Avast were "promoted" here, you cant buy advertising like that, and they get it for nothing.

As has been said, once you have the "free" one they then hope to sell you the full "internet security suite".

So the free software is a sort of loss-leader to get their name known.

Also if you have THEIR product on your PC you dont have one of their competitors.
When you change be sure tio completely remove Norton from your system. Uninstall does NOT do it. Norton has tentacles all over the inside of your PC. You need to download the proper Norton removal tool and run that.
