Firefox Problems

just updated to Firefox 8.0.1.
now found that opening the program uses 185,000k of memory and more than 65% of available CPU, and the hard drive runs all the time.

plus cannot close the program, only way of exiting is via "end process" function of task manager.

anyone know why this could be happening? what's so different about this latest version of Firefox?

I don't think the memory usage is a big deal: On my machine, IE8 uses 134,544 and Chrome uses 210,568. Firefox comes about about the same as your figure.

However, as I don't use FF much, I was on 7, so I've just upgraded to 8. It crashed during the upgrade, then it opened a welcome page for every addon, plus FF itself.
Then when I closed it, it remained running but not visible and I had to terminate it manually.
Finally, it constantly hangs when clicking a link in AB.

These are all the kinds of things that persuaded me to switch to Chrome.

... oh, and I've just gone to close it (FF), and the bloody thing's hung completely!

Just checked. FF8 is using 310,000K and about 5% CPU spiking to about 30% when doing something.
I am running XP Home + SP3 with 1.5GB of RAM

Try going into the Prefetch folder (which is within the Windows folder on your hard drive) and deleting the files relating to Firefox.exe and Plugin-Container.exe.

There's a warning about a virus or something which can be introduced when attempting to upgrade to what purports to be Firefox ver. 8 in the current edition of Computer Active. I am away from home at the moment but on Monday I will let you know what was written. I can't remember what the fix was but I seem to remember advising that you run a virus check with Mcafee or Norton or such like.

A lot of people have turned away from Firefox since version 5 and changed over to Chrome. The repeated major version releases and the "look at me" pages that come up every time it is upgraded are annoying too.

Earlier versions of Firefox were reknown for memory leaks though every time it got a new version they claimed to have fixed it. Sounds like version 8 is back to its old ways.

Also note that Firefox is far less secure than IE or Chrome when run on Wndows Vista or 7. Unless you really want some plugins there is no good reason to be using Firefox.
