Adding a Hit Counter

I am trying to add a free hit counter to my website.

I choose the one I want, add the address. It tells me to cut and paste the code which I add to my page. When I publish all I get it just shows the long code.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks, just tried that one and no luck either. Just shows the long code. Guess I must be doing something wrong :(

I am so sorry, you lost me. I am a complete novice.

I have just opened the page on the program I am using and paste it on. I really think I should give up as I have no idea :(
