stereo recording from camcorder through TV

when I transfer my camcorder tape to video - the playback only comes out of one speaker on the TV - I think it's a nicam stereo TV - Is this normal? or do I have the wrong lead? - Maybe my camcorder only records in mono anyway and it won't matter if it's only coming out of one channel ( only a cheap camcorder)
