Is there a button on top that says 'scan'?
Have you installed the software that came with the printer?

Thanks Lie-in-King ! Have the Manual.
hc4361......Printer working fine and can scan Documents on Printer itself but cannot Scan to PC.
Installation done by means of Printer Disc which was provided when I bought Printer.
There should be an HP Application on your pc that operates the scanner; mine's called HP Digital Manager.

According to the Manual HP Photosmart software should be installed and an Icon in Notification Tray should pop up when using Scan button on Printer........nothing appears on mine and was wondering if software was not installed from original Disc.
If so, is there a free download to be had from HP ?
It might be in your Programs. Reload the software you have & file on your desktop (so you can find it). This may solve the probs

A picture will scan straight into a photo program ... like IrfanView .. or PSP ... Coral .. whatever .. by selecting 'Twain Source' in that program.

A document 'can' be scanned as a picture ...and saved in greyscale maybe .. but is usually imported into something like Scansoft (with character recognition) then saved as any of a variety of formats .. like word doc, etc. HP just integrate their own software (supposedly)

What do you see for the HP scanner or printer in Device Manager? (Tick the View/ 'show hidden devices' setting. You may see something in 'Imaging Devices) Check for unknown or yellow entries.
Hi again ..
This is what you should be reading .. on HP site ...

Perform the following steps if you are unable to scan directly from HP Solution Center in Windows XP.

1.
Click Start , and then click My Computer .
2.
Double-click Local Disc (C:) .
3.
Double-click Program Files .
4.
Double-click HP .
5.
Double-click Digital Imaging .
6.
Double-click Bin .
7.
Locate and double-click one of the following files. You will only have one to choose from.
*
Hpiscnapp.exe
*
Hpqscnvw.exe
This will launch the HP Scan application.
8.
Select New Scan , and then change any desired settings to the scan.
9.
Click Accept to save the scan to the desired location.
10.
Follow these steps if you need to save the scan as another file type, such as a .PDF:
1.
Right-click the recently saved file to open it in another application, such as Microsoft Word.
2.
Save the new scan as the desired file type.
(That's XP)

Have Diagnostic Facility installed and all seems OK with Printer. Do not have HP Digital Imaging Facility installed as far as I can see.

Still no joy with scanning from Printer to my PC. Maybe I need free downloadable Software installed, any recommendations anyone ?
Irfanview for pics .. .It just has to see the scanner .. with the Twain interface.
Scansoft for docs .. Not free tho, as has character recognition and does loads of tricks with pdf's, etc.

Thanks AlBags !!
You 'could' have a look in Paint first..
File ... from Scanner or Camera ...
to see if the device is recognised first. If it is .. and is switched on .. the device should show there.
Did you follow this warning when you set it up?

/// WARNING: To ensure that the software is installed correctly, do not
connect the USB cable until step 14.
Connect the power cord and adapter.///
