Long-lost hidden emails, re-appearing.

Occasionally I receive a fresh brand-spanking new email, which is clearlly unread but
approximately 2 or more months old. Where has it been hiding all this time and how come?
Where has it been hibernating and why and how can it happen without my knowledge?
