Laptop ram upgrade - Better to use 1 single GB module or 2 x 512MB modules?

Going to be upgrading laptop soon. Would it be better to have one module of 1GB or 2 modules of 512MB each?

marginally better to have two matched sticks as a pair.

But it's so marginal it's not really worth losing sleep over it. I presume the laptop already has RAM in it? if so buy a single 1Gb stick and add it and keep whatever is already in there too.
