Go to 'My Documents' and look for the registry backup file which CCleaner should have put there (unless you changed the default location for it). The file will have a .REG extension. Right-click on it and select 'Merge'. Restart your PC.

thanks Chris,i found 'registration entries'...in my docs...right clicked that and at the top it said merge so clicked it and restarted....difficult to know if it made adiff as a lot of the symptoms are still apparent. Probably a daft question but the fact that i havnt upgraded my browser from ie7 wont be making any diff just yet would it?
While I'm no great fan of Microsoft programs, I think it's unlikely that upgrading Internet Explorer would have any effect on other things on your computer. Even so, it might be worth trying a decent browser instead of Internet Explorer. Most of the 'regulars' around here (myself included) use Firefox:

I can't see that these two things are related to be honest.

It sounds like you have your common old malware infection and the CCleaner run was probably nothing to do with it... it's a very lightweight registry cleaner.

Download malwarebytes on another computer and put it on a usb memory stick, connect the infected computer by ethernet (not wireless) and start it in safe mode with network support, once it's started install malwarebytes from the memory stick, let it update and run a fulll scan.

Once thats done it should remove the problem, now restart in normal mode and go to the computer manufacturers website and download all the latest drivers for the computer and install them.
try system restore if you are using a windows OS.

hit the start button go into Accessories>System tools>systen restore

click restore my PC to an earlier date and choose a date on the calendar that is before the time you made the changes. This should restore your system to exactly how it was before you made the cahnges. might work.
