is there a straighforward step by step guide for converting flv [and similar files for mp3?

Have several files - flv etc to I'd like to put on an mp3 player. Is there an idiot's guide [for me] that's reasonable easy to follow + convert said files ? [preferably free!]. I have tried and got hopelessly lost. Thanks
prev my screen after a while starts to have pixels come over it till eventually i have to reboot
