start up troubles

my pc sometimes doesnt go through the start up, when i reboot i get it to do a start up repair,
this generally gets it going & a system restore- but it can last a week or a day befor e it wont boot up again, and then go through the whole process again, its a Acer desktop 1 1/2 yrs old with vista, what is the probable cause, hardware or software.

possibly an automatic update of some sort causing a problem.

Have you checked the event log (control panel > administrative tools > event viewer, look for entries with a red cross next to them) as that may give a clue.

also does it seem happen at any sort of regular time or day?

I have stopped automatic updates for windows, & select the security type only,
it happens most times of day/week dependant of who uses it.
but i have submitted it for a health check to a local mender/geek - not a shop - and awaiting the verdict, so i'm on my old slow pc at the moment. will let you know the autopsy result.
