I have been loaned an XP installation disk but need to copy it in order to use it to load it onto one of my other machines. I tried dragging and dropping onto a blank cd but the copy wouldn't boot up. What have I done wrong?

Thanks,
Cal

You can't drag and drop onto a disk, you need to actually burn the data to the disk using burning software such as Nero. I think most PC's nowadays have some sort of DVD/CD burning software pre installed. If you only have one DVD drive on your PC, then I suspect you will need to copy the disc to your hard drive, and then burn that data from your hard drive to the disc.

Ok, I copied the files to a folder on my desktop and then used Nero to burn a data cd. It won't boot up when the disk is in the machine?
I have an XP disc that I no longer need. If you can't manage to copy the one you've borrowed, you're welcome to it.
If you want it e-mail me at [email protected].
You don't need to give your address. I could post it C/O your local post office.
You don't just copy files, you need to make an exact copy of the CD_ROM.

A program like imgburn http://www.imgburn.com/ will let you create a .iso file of the disk image and then burn it to another disk..
Hi Cal,

I am certainly no expert, but maybe you have to make a bootable cd, but I am not sure how you do this.

A couple of years ago I had a 'dodgy' copy of XP that I downloaded. This disc did not boot up automatically, I had to explore alll of the files on the disc and click on the setup icon, which then installed XP.
Even if you manage to illegally copy the disc and install it onto another system you still have the problem of needing a product licence code to activate it within 28 days of installation. (WPA)
