If one uses the Insert>Fields>Date menu item, the format of the date that is inserted into the document is mm/dd/yy i.e. the American format.

Is it getting this from a system setting or is there some way to get it to use another format - e.g. dd/mm/yy - as the default? (I know that one can use the Other option in the Insert>Fields menu to use other formats but I would like to set my own default.)

I can't find anything in the Writer options nor by internet searching (so far); if it requires a change in the registry then that wouldn't be a problem for me - but I've had a quick look and can't see anything there either.

Anyone know if it can be done? Thanks in advance.

If I may make another suggestion?
If you are getting the date printed in the American style then I think you have WRITER set for the ENGLISH (USA) language.
Go to TOOLS/ OPTIONS/ LANGUAGE SETTINGS/ LANGUAGE and change the language to ENGLISH (UK) and the date format should also change to the English format.

Hi, in Open Office go to FORMAT, click CELLS and, listed under Category, you can alter the date, time. etc as you wish.

Thanks for taking the time to answer but CELLS is in Calc not Writer.
In Writer, go to Insert, Fields and then go to OTHER at the bottom of the list.

I did say in my original posting that I know about Other for other formats but that I looking to set the default to a format of my choice e.g. dd/mm/yy which is the norm in th UK.
