Not able to erase DVD-Rws

I have a number of Sony brand DVD-RWs which have suddenly started to say that:

a) Explorer says they are not in the drive - when they are

b) Roxio cannot erase them via the software which probably burnt them originally - I say probably because I previously had Nero installed but changed

and

c) cannot be formatted by another program (BurnAware Free)

Any ideas peeps
