windows xp starts up too many things

How can I limit the programs and hardware that start up when I start windows xp?
At the moment my computer searches for scanner,printer etc etc..things I don't need to start.

Click on start> run> type in msconfig. Click on OK, then click Start Up tab and then untick progs you do not wish to start up. Click Apply and then click ok.
