I use the internet on my laptop via a dongle, when travelling in Europe. This costs so much per Mb of usage. Is there an accurate way of working out how many Kb`s or Mb`s will be used up when surfing, emailing etc.? 711

will be used up.... NO

there is no whay of knowing if you are going to be looking at webpages with large images or not, or if your emails will have attachments etc etc.

You can keep an eye on it while you are using it though, most software that comes with dongles has the ability to do this. if not there are lots of download meters that will do the job too.
I tried a couple of programs when I first started with mobile broadband - some give too small a reading which is not good when it's really punitive for exceeding the monthly limit; the best that I found and have used ever since is Networx http://www.softperfect.com/products/networx/ (hope this link appears properly)
