I would like to set up a webpage for my mum's birthday, and put some pics of the family in it, so that she can go and see them , and also add some as she likes. The trouble is I don't know how to go about it. I have heard of some providers like Lycos that give you free space to set up a page, and give all the instructions on how to go about it. So my questions are : how long would it take me to set up a basic webpage with this method, considering I've never done that before ? Can someone else (my brother) add to the page from another location (we don't live in the same country) ? Can you add photos to a webpage easily ? Thank you for your help !

Hi there

Its pretty easy to set up a webpage. I set up my own webpage in college. You can set up a webpage for free using Yahoo Geocities or Lycos or similar pages. Next, you need some webpage design software. At college i used Macromedia dreamweaver but It's VERY hard to get for home uses and its very expensive so i'd just use MS front page express if you dont want to have a hard time searching for the software. Timewise, My web page took me a few months to do.

Someone else CAN add pages to a website as long as they know your password for your account.( I used Yahoo geocities for mine).

Next answer: adding pictures to webpages are very easy. just upload them into your webpage in your web page design software. You can then upload the webpage the site that your webpage is on.

P.S. If you want cool stuff to put on your webpage like Hit COunters, Email list etc, try www.bravenet.com. You need to subscribe to it but once you subscribe you get access to free web page design tools!!

Bye for now!!

One easy way to put pics online rather than build a webpage as such would be to start a group on msn, then upload your pics there. You can make your mum, brother and anyone else members so they can post pics and write messages. I would make it a private group so only members get to see the pics and messages.

If you want to learn how to build a website, then look on google.com for lissaexpains (a USA site) which says it is html for kids but is very handy for adults (including me). Most ISP's offer free webspace, and you can use an FTP program to upload the pages, etc.

Find a site you like the look of and copy the source code. Replace the actual content with your own (remembering to change the filenames for picture links, etc.) et voila! One ready-to-go web page. Or use Mozilla composer. It comes as part of the Mozilla application suite, but I think you can get it separately as well (or you can probably download the suite and only install the bit you actually want, and ditch the rest), it's free and pretty intuitive.
go and look at http://www.flickr.com/. it allows you to upload pictures from anywhere, and it's free.
I know a lot of people knock the comany ,but i recommend AOL - it is by far the easiest way . go to www.hometown.aol.com . sign up it is free. easy 123 designer is the program they use, you ideally need broadband though or it'll be slow.
One idea (already mentioned) is to look online for a gallery of images that you think looks relatively simple but still good. Post that here and I'll show you how to use that as inspiration (but not steal the content completely!) for your own page.

Creating a page like this is fantastically simple but can look a bit ugly without some kind of decoration on the page.

Finally, find out if your ISP gives you free webspace as you need somewhere online to save the web page and all of the images. Failing that, there are lots of sites that do give you free webspace. If you & 3 others all knew the username and password to log into that site then anyone could upload images and add them to the page.

Hi everyone ! Thank you for your answers ! I have tried some of your suggestions, and after a few very frustrating attempts at building a page with one of the free services, I have decided to go for an online album instead (the one phl666 suggested is very good!) ! It's much easier that way . I gave my bro the log in and password, so that he'll upload some of his pics as well. It's going well at the minute (and it makes me feel very clever ! lol ), so thank you all !
