Windows Media Player and Media Center

My laptop is XP + SP3.

It's several months since I last ran either Windows Media Player or Media Center and they both used to work ok but I've just tried running them and both freeze as soon as they get to their main display screen.

The task manager reckons that each is running rather than 'not responding' but nothing within either program is clickable - they seem to be stuck somewhere near the end of their initialisation. I've tried leaving each running for several minutes just to see if they eventually recover and even tried this with the firewall turned off, just in case, but nothing works so far.

Has anyone any sugestions as to how to get them working? It's a laptop so I only have recovery disks, not installation disks which might allow for the individual programs to be re-installed.

Thanks in advance.

What version of WMP have you got installed on yopur computer.
Try Microsoft.com to download the latest WMP

It's whatever was latest back then, certainly later then v10 (the wizard for that does nothing because it finds that a later version is installed), any I can see anything within the files that is a version number.

I was going to wait until after a backup this evening before downloading any version but was hopeful that there might be something simple like a registry fix that I could try in the meantime.

* ...and I can't see anything within the files that is a version number.
try going into control panel, then add/remove .
scroll down to window media player and remove it.
then go to microsoft.com and download version 11 of windows media player

I have now done a download and re-installation of WMP 11 and that program seems to work. Media Centre also works to a degree - it falls over at certain points with an exception error but I don't feel too bothered about that at present.
