Desktop Icon Chaos ?

All of a sudden every start up results in all the Desktop Icons loading up vertically to the left of the screen,
Auto arrange is not selected. Nothing in start up has been changed, Screen resolution is unchanged..
I use the excellent Desktop restore freeware so it easily remedied but why is it happening all of a sudden. ?
Any ideas are welcome as always.
Windows XP to SP3 and all current updates,

xbox 360 connection failure
