CCleaner is increasingly popular, and I've seen it mentioned on here a few times.

I've even responded to a question about it, and I said I thought it was good.

But now ...

I've just found this ...

http://ccleanerexposed.org/

One of my lappys died yesterday, for no apparent reason, and could not be saved. I had to buy a new one.

The crash happened ...

... just after I had run CCleaner !!! !!! !!! !!! !!!

Just thought I'd mention it.

But surely you could have just wiped and re-installed your OS and apps on the laptop?

I dont think the software could wreck the hardware....

MrBounty ... Hi, again ...

Yes, but that would have lost all my data. The only solution I could come up with (with assistance from here, as you know) was ...

Buy a new lappy

and a "caddy" ??

Put the old hard drive into the caddy and extract the data.

I'm now left with a superfluous old lappy, but hey ho.

I've also bought an external hard drive, so that I can be a bit more diligent about backing up!
Question Author
I wonder if you know this ...

I know have my old hard drive connected to my new lappy. It appears as a "Drive F"

Can I go into Drive F and find any of the following?

And where would they be?

Emails saved in Outlook Express

Email address book

Email settings from Outlook Express

Internet Explorer "Favourites" list

Aaaaahhhh....i remember now, that you needed to get your data off the corrupt HD......

.....but.....couldnt you have bought a new HD and caddy, put the new HD in the laptop, reinstalled everything, then used the old HD in the caddy to get your data?

Could have saved from purchasing a new laptop....
Question Author
Yes ... I could ...

... but I didn't think of that ...

... ... ... until you mentioned it just now !!

Favourites is usually an easy one:

Go into the F-Drive

Documents and Settings folder

If you used the machine as Admin (or if you there is a folder with whatever name you used on the old machine) go in there

There should be a folder called Favourites

Copy it and paste it into the same place on the new laptop (C-Drive)

OR

Just do a search in the Documents and Settings folder for Favourites folders.....then copy them.

Cant help you much with the Outlook Express - it's not a prog i've used for about 10 years!
lol

BUT....changing a laptop's HD can be very fiddly, if you've never done it before.....and the reinstallation of OS and software can be laborious...
Jayne i use c cleaner on all my lappys /pcs no problem.
Thta link looks more like an advert for another registry cleaner.
Im no techie but i imagine if you ask someone like vhg or chuckie they will be able to help.

Could the problem be linked to any of those adult sites you go to?
Seriously after you put up a lkink and i opened dit there was all sorts of adware etc that popped up , all from a link that actually went to an adult video site.

Im sure you remember.

leg.
mr bounty as sh e has another laptop all the time anyway.

re: one of my laptops crashed.

surely removing the hd from the efunct one , i think 4 screws is all on m y dell laptop and putting in either an external enclosure or even one of these media player type enclosures , i see them here for 40 , and then simply connecting to her working lappy and transferring the data?

infact if she got it checked out by a pc tech im sure he could have transferred the data for her .
Question Author
Surely EVERYONE uses Outlook Express !!??
Unless you personally know someone, going to a shop, or wherever, to get a techie to check it out and possibly transfer data, will cost more cash - I was just saying that if she could swap HDs herself, the actual moving of data is relatively easy
I am wary of registry tools. I ran regtool (the most recommended in your link) and it decided it should delete files belonging to an application about which it could have no intelligent knowledge. While by name seemingly tmp files, they function as lock markers in a team system. I don't trust any tool to make such profound system-wide changes.
Mr bounty in that case removing a hard drive from a lappy is far easier than say apc.

like i said 2 screws on the cover and 2 screws holding the hard drive in place .

Whiffy has now given a technical answer that im sure jayne is digesting.

Btw outlook express?

never used it in my life.

doesnt appear to work here.

is there any reason for that ?

Bit of a complicated thread, Leggy, but ...

If the gist was that I could have used another lappy to extract the data from the HD in the broken lappy ...

Technically, yes. But ... not going to happen.

I don't share data between lappys. That's why I have more than one.
Question Author
Whiffey ...

I am now ... as of yesterday ... also wary of freebie "magic fix" programs.
Legend - removing an HD from a desktop PC is much easier (and less hassle) than from a laptop.

Last weekend, i did almost the same job as jayne had to do, on a Sony Vaio laptop - had to remove the bottom half of the cash, remove the left hand side USB ports, then remove the HD - on a desktop, you open the case, remove the HD.

I also agree with Whifffey in that i wouldn't use these sort of progs.....

this is a very misleading thread - the page isn't linked to any evidence .... it's simply a spam site trying to sell ineffective software.

there are two classes of cleaner ...
registry cleaners - which are almost universally ignored within the trade - I've never seen a serious review of a registry cleaner - and don't know anyone (who knows what they are doing) who uses one
at best they do nothing - at worst they damage your system
and this is what your link refers to - 4 different ways to waste money.

CCleaner is a system cleaner which is a different matter entirely - it deletes temp files and all the other detritus left by day to day use - you can do it manually - ccleaner just speeds things up

agreed there is a registry cleaner tab which runs independently to the main prog... but it's very light weight ...
really just snake oil to impress the plebs
.. anyone with even a basic understanding would ignore it.

your problem is a well documented one ... and it's unlikely that ccleaner had anything to do with it at all.

further - yours was a software problem which WAS fixable ... if you'd known how
(if it was hardware it couldn't be blamed on cc either)
you just jumped to to the wrong conclusion and bought another machine (bit like throwing your car way because you couldn't get the ashtray out to empty it)

CCleaner is free software ...
and it does a good job
the potential benefits far outweigh the possible glitches to most users - it certainly contributes to a healthier system

in the wrong hands even a feather duster can kill
Question Author
Well ...

That's me put in my place !!
jayne did you actually use the registry cleaner option when you ran ccleaner? You don't say.

If so why?
Well, my feather duster's going straight in the bin. Always thought it had an evil look about it ......
