I would like to organise my googlemail account and file emails I want to keep in a set of folders, like you can in hotmail and other email systems. Is there a way I can do this or am I missing something really simple?

Googlemail doesn't use a folder system to organise messages. In its place you apply a label to each message. Labels are attached and created from the tool bar above the messages. The advantage is that you can have more than 1 label per message using Gmail whereas in normal mail programmes you can't have a mail message in more than 1 folder (without duplicating it).
So set up labels like you would folders and then apply them to your messages when you get them. You will then see the labels on the left of the page. Click the label to review
i use the label system and it is fine--however i initially thought that after labeling a message it could be removed from the inbox--doesn't seem to be the case--or can it be done?
You need to use the "Move to" button next to Labels on the tool bar, to store messages but remove them from the inbox
thanks milvus--sooooooooooooo obvious i didn't think of it--cheers
Or simply select 'Archive' and all labelled and ticked messages will be sent to their appropriate folder.
