Computer rejecting printer

I recently had to restore my computer to factory settings.
I have managed to bring it all up to date (re installing different software etc) and have all windows updates.
However my printer (Canon Pixma MP610) is causing grief.
I can install the CD ok but as soon as I turn the printer on the computer just turns off and won't re start unless I turn the printer off!
Help!

Disconnect the printer from the computer
Turn computer on
Uninstall the printer software (Add/Remove Programs)
Restart the computer
With the printer still disconnected, re-install the printer software - don't connect the printer until you are told to.
