Is it possible for me to set up an email account using my computer for someone else who has a different ISP provider.
My ISP is Tesco and my friends is BT. She doesn't have access to her computer at the moment and I was wondering if I could set up an email account for her using my computer so once she gets her computer back she could go to the account I set up.????
does this make sense?? any help appreciated...

Yes.

Just use the outgoing (SMTP) server that matches the ISP (so mail.tesco.net) rather then the BT's outgoing server..

You may also want to go into the advanced settings for the account and out a tick in "leave messages on the server" that way when your friend gets access back to her computer she won't have "lost" any emails by them being downloaded onto your computer.
Or use any of the web based email providers

Googlemail
Hotmail
Yahoo

I prefer googlemail.
BT use yahoo mail - rather than reorganising her life
you can log in to bt mail via yahoo's web interface
(google mail won't do it)

https://login.yahoo.com/config/login_verify2?.intl=uk&.partner=bt-1&.done=http%3a//bt.yahoo.com/%3f

her BT ID and password - just like at home ... and it's sorted
no permanent configuration required

it also works from http://www.yahoo.com
hey, Happy christmas AC :)

Hope ya had a good one
back at ya chuck

I got a pony this year

..... at least from what was in my stocking I think that's what it is

... not found it yet though

thanks guys but I'm a novice and don't quite understand the answers.
Could you give me an idiots guide please,
thank you
go to www.yahoo.com
get her to sign in to her e-mail
in the id field - she should enter her ID
in the password field .... yep she should enter her password

to sign in ...... press the sign in button (you do this by pointing at the button and pressing the left mouse button
(you need to point using the mouse pointer ... not your finger ... well you do use your finger ... but on the left mouse button

oh did I mention you get to the page using your internet browser ?

(oh good it's not xmas any more .... is that simple enough
....?

ac the troll. Have you ever considered a career in showbiz. You are a laugh a month, a sarcastic **** of a laugh a month.
How can my friend sign in if she's not here and has no computer...and ..I can't contact her and don't know her ID or password?
My concern is that using my computer and my modem would invalidate the email address when she eventually accesses it using a different phone line and modem...ie...this email address is already taken.
Is this how it works?
An idiots guide would be most welcome and please Troll ..keep up the spirit of Christmas by being sarcastic to others less able than yourself
izzy whizzy lets get busy
I'm not being intentionaly sarcastic
you asked for an idiot's guide ... so I did one especially with you in mind
(and I did wait 'till xmas was a dim and distant memory)

>>How can my friend sign in if she's not here and has no >>computer...and ..I can't contact her and don't know her ID >>or password?

so what's the point? - I genuinely haven't the foggiest idea what you want to achieve given what you just said

her account would come with an e-mail address
and I've told you twice how to access a bt internet account via yahoo ... chuck gave you an alternative - and ethel gave you another e-mail account option which would do it too.
(you could set one up for me at the same time

probably the easiest way to answer your question is just to say no - you cant .....most other people could ... but ... well ...

if you know any of us ... (I might live up to my name I make no secret of it) .... we do not intentionally give bad advice (we might be wrong sometimes ... but never malicious) so the methods given will all work - and if you follow them propperly won't cause your friend problems

expect more humour in january ...
humour?

that's a strange description of anything that precedes this answer.
