I have the file on a cd, but how can i put it onto my laptop, as windows cannot start up, it just says to reinstall the above file (hal.dll)

Boot from your windows XP CD the when you get the option hit R for the recovery console and then type

expand d:\i386\hal.dl_ c:\windows\system32\hal.dll

and hit enter

The first d after the expand command is your CD rom drive letter that the XP disk is in, so change it if it is not d.
