when i logon i can only see the wallpaper

when i logon to windows i can only see the wallpaper no icons. i have tried various suggestions such as starting in safe mode, i only get a black screen with safe mode in each corner, ctrl,alt,delete and going to task manager & new task typing in explorer, but nothing. i have gone into CMD and did chkdsk but nothing it obviously is a virus but how can i get rid of it without formatting my hard drive?

Have you tried right clicking anywhere on the desktop, clicking 'arrange icons' then 'display icons'?

When i click on the desktop nothing happens, you can not see anything. I have tried everything i can think of. nothing seems to work. I am positive this is a very nasty virus, I just did not want to format the hard drive..so any suggestions welcomed.

You don't need to format your hard drive.

What is your Operating System? XP, Vista?

Is it just the icons that are missing? Everything else as it should be?

You did notice that Ethel said RIGHT-click on your desktop?

I have found out it was a virus from an e-mail entitled statement of fees 2008/09. I tried hijacker and various other programs but had to format the hard drive. thanks for the advice

When you log into windows do ctrl + alt + del log out and log back in you desktop should be okay then system restore to before you had the virus.. Hope this helps....

Shame you had to reformat.

You have learned the hard way NEVER to click on any links from people you do not know. The "statement of fees" and "you have received a greeting card" are two popular doing the rounds.

NEVER click on any links in emails that :
1) Are not addressed to you
2) You don't know who they are from
3) R ful ov speling erors
4) Urge you to PASS THIS ON TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW!!!!
