Disk cleanup

Have windows2000 on rather old drive, 4-5 years old, but keep things to a minimum! defragment, delete cache, cookies ect, but have had a problem now for over a year, (but couldnt be bothered to do anything about it till now) where by ..when i go to system tools, to do a disk cleanup, the programe starts up, goes to 4 bars and then just seems to not go no further, altho my drive is wizzing round, the programe seems to have either been corrupted/frozen, apart from wipeing all of the drive, any ideas how i can troubleshoot this or reinstall?
