Search function on Vista

Am I being incredibly stupid or what ... in the old days when you had lost a document you just right clicked on the start menu and went to search and a box came up in which you could put a word or phrase in the file, and it usually found things immediately. Now on Vista there is a stupid box with no way of putting a word or phrase and if you do put anything it comes up with a million documents none of which are usually it, or if it is in there you have to wade through them all .. is this progress ???
