Maybe a real expert will come along soon but I've got a D-Link wireless router and now I don't need my modem.

I've got the telephone cable with ADSL filter attached, phone plugged in one side and the router plugged in the other.

Sorry I can't remember exactly how I set it up but I remember it took me ages before I realised that my broadband moden was not needed as well.
To configure a router, the procedure is as follows.

Disconnect your adsl modem, connect the router to the adsl filter with the supplied cable.

Connect your PC, or Laptop to the router using an ethernet cable, this should have been supplied with your router.

Open your web browser and type in the IP address of the router e.g http://192.168.1.1 or 192.168.2.1

You should then see the router setup page, if you are asked for a username/password, it should be admin for both.

You then configure the router with your adsl login username/password.

Do this first to check internet connectivity using a cable connection to the router before configuriing wireless access.
You seem to have bought an ADSL router.

Most ADSL routers also have the modem included, so as mattie says, you dont actualy need the existing modem.

Check the box, it will probably say "ADSL Router with modem" or something like that.
Also, you say he will use his laptop through your computer.

If you have bought an ADSL modem/router then he does not need your computer at all.

His laptop will connect wirelessly directly to the router.

This may help
