I very much doubt that a computer that was built to run W98 will be powerful enough to run XP.

XP requires much more power to run than W98 ever did and I am afraid XP will probably be almost unusable.

If you can tell me the CPU type in your PC and the amount of memory you have I will give you an idea if the PC is even capable of running Windows XP.

As for answering your question, I am not sure what you have done. It depends what type of instal you did and what options you took during the install of XP.

There is a description here about the upgrade process, maybe have a look through that and see if you can see where you may have gone wrong.

After reading through the article above I see there are a few choices you could have made which would affect the install.

File system: During the install did you get prompted to change the file system to NTFS (from FAT32)?. If you did then the W98 install will be "lost", but if the XP install didnt complete properly then you finish up with neither installed.

For example it may have run out of disk space during the install and so did not complete. Do you know how big your hard disk is (XP takes up a lot of disk space)

Installation Type: Did you chose upgrade or clean install?

If you chose Clean install then you will have lost the W98 files, but maybe if XP did not complete properly you may have finished up with neither installed.

Need to know a bit more about what you chose during the install.

One other thing, Windows XP does have a repair option I think.

If you start the Windows XP install again, and it finds XP already installed it asks something like "do you want to repair XP".

If you say Yes then the install program will rebuild the XP directories so it may then work.

The other option is to just do a complete Windows XP install again from scratch and see if it sorts itself out.

If the install asks you "do you want to boot from CD" only say Yes the very first time, and ignore it if you get asked again when the PC reboots during the install.

Make sure the XP install runs right to the end, it is quite a long process.
