I have bought a new laptop in Spain (as I live in Spain) and there is Spanish version of Windows Vista (Basic) installed. I realise that I should have anticipated this, BUT is it easy to substitute the Spanish versio of Vista with the English version? If so how?

Sadly NO -not with Vista Basic, only the top version of Vista (Ultimate) can be changed. You would have to buy a new license of Windows Vista. here in Spain that would cost about 125. I purchase them al the time here, and recently had to install 11 licenses at a local lawyers office.

As a laptop comes with a recovery CD you would not be able to use that in the future other than for drivers. Also, you may invalidate the warranty if you change the system supplied. Of course the warranty not be the main priority here.

You would also need to backup everything as your machine will need to be formatted. it's not a big job for a professional but for home users you need to think it through. If you want a more advice, come back to me.

Dave, thank you for your prompt answer, "backup" is not an issue as there is nothing personal on it as it is new, bought to teach my wife basics of IT!!!
I suppose that I could cut my losses and sell it on eBay or struggle on with Spanish Vista. Any ideas? Will certainly use your website.

P.S I assume from your answer that you live in Spain
Yes,
I live in Mijas -Costa del Sol. I work all over the coast and have done for 13 years. I am the longest serving UK technician on the coast. I also provide remote control support if needed.

You could sell your laptop and re-purchase, or change the license as i said before.

You can buy UK versions in Gib or when in the UK. Even if you buy in the UK you can transfer your warranty etc., from the manufacturers website to a Spanish address. -As it happens my UK bought Acer is currently in Barcelona being repaired under warranty. Excellent service too -collected from my door by courier.

If you are happy to change the license and re-install, then you only have to worry about the warranty conditions if your data is not backed up. In times of real problems you can always put the Spanish version back on from your original disk, so as to send it for repair. Then re-install your UK license. A bit fiddly but workable. Good backups are vital in any case . .
