I tried to download a video clip, and I got the following error message :

Some of the MIME types previously assosiated with the QuickTime plug-in are currently associated with other applications, should I restore these MIME types associations to QuickTime?

Should I click yes or no? Would it interfere with any of the other applications if I clicked YES?

As you know, it is the extension of a file that defines what type of file it is. So DOC is a Microsoft word file.

There are LOADS of extensions for audio and movie files (mp3, mpg, mpeg, mov, avi, wma and loads more).

When you install a program that can play audio or video (say RealPlayer) it will try to allocate all the extensions for itself, so whatever you try to play it uses RealPlayer to play it.

All of these programs (Windows Media Player, RealPlayer, QuckTime etc) are trying to become the player of choice for all audio or video on your PC.

The main extension used by QuickTime is MOV.

You are getting the message above because some other program has set itself as the "player" for QuickTime MOV files, and so QuickTime is giving you the chance to change it so that QuickTime plays MOV files.

The problem is that if you say Yes, it may not only change MOV files to use Quicktime, but other extensions as well, so that MAY interfere with your other applications.

I think one of the options on that window is "dont not prompt me any more". I think if you select that then you no longer get the message.
You can see which program is set to open each of the file extensions on your PC as follows (this is on Windows XP, I assume Vista is similar)

Open "My Documents" on the desktop then choose "Tools" menu and "Folder Options".

On the "Folder Options" window select the "File Types" tab.

This will take a few seconds to refresh, but eventually will list all the extensions registered on your PC, and which program will open them.

Scroll down to MOV files and select it.

The lower part of the window shows it opens with "Quick Time Player" (yours may be different).

You can use the Change button to change which program opens it (if you want to)

Note you can click on the "File Types" column heading to sort the programs in alphabetical order to see which programs open which types of files.
