In XP it is start - my network places - view network connections

Right click on the wireless connection - click 'properties' and the 'show icon in notification area' is ticked.

Don't know if that is any use for Vista
Right click Windows button (start button) - properties- Notification Area - put a tick in the network box and apply. That should sort it
I've tried and tried, but I just can't guess what was behind the asterisks that so offended AB
