PLEASE help anyone!! I use my dads PC always. He has broadband through the landline. I want my own laptop in my room. People say i can only have one if my dad goes wireless or if my laptop is directly linked to my dads modem. I would rather have my own server. However I understand that u cannot have two servers going through on the same landline. What can i do?? Is there anyway i can have my own laptop in my room with my own server?? What are these cards that people have to put at the back of the laptop and are linked to your mobile??? Anyone please help i would be soooo grateful!!! x

Wht can't your dad just get a wireless router (about 50 or less) and then you can connect on a laptop from your room - assuming you get a wireless enabled laptop.

My dad is stuck in his ways!! He says its easy for people outside to hack in!! ????
Hello , if your father goes wireless via a router , he can make sure he passwords it and makes it security enabled .

Ive tried to explain to my dad everything about the wireless but he is soooo set in his ways!!!!! Is there no other way of me having my own internet connection in my room without the phoneline???:-(
Connecting through your mobile phone would be too expensive - and the connection is horribly so.

If the pc isn't too far from your room, you could connect by cable - buy a router and connect your laptop by cable to the router.

That is MORE secure than connecting straight to modem as the router has its own firewall.
this is sooooooo typical

you say modem ... but you don't say broadband (or cable!!!!!)
If Dad is soooooo set in his ways - is he using his trysty old dialup connection

If he is you actually only have one option - ICS
Id broadband you have two options ... you could use ICS (sharing) but the best ... is a router
(the absolute best is a wired connection to the router)

but in this case the router (50) will come with a surcharge of a minimum of 300.00 (a new laptop)
so dad may be a little reluctant ....

finally ... why sooooo must you have your own connection ... what u up to?
ACtheTROLL, you obviously didn't read the question closely enough. taliesin238 DID say 'Broadband'. Read the second sentence again "He has broadband through the landline"

ACtheTROLL - What is so wrong with someone wanting their own computer? What could i be up to? Im a 30 year old student about to begin my dissertation and i also use the computer for work. I only get to use the family computer when everyone else has finished and i now need to have more access!! The family computer is downstairs in the hallway and at midnight onwards (which is when the computer is free) is soo cold when everyone else is in bed.
All
I'm soooooo sorry - let me apologise in revere order of importance

You are right .... I didn't read the whole question ....
however If you'd read all of my answer you may have seen that I did actually answer the question (however badly it was spelled)
(second option)
If he is you actually only have one option - ICS
Id broadband you have two options ... you could use ICS (sharing) but the best ... is a router
(the absolute best is a wired connection to the router)

Again accept my apologies
based on the slang/phrasing you used (and the fact that you are still at home) - I made assumptions which it seems were incorrect.

To more fully answer the question then - as a working person (see ...I'm learning! - no assumption about the use of an "x")

There is nothing unusual about wanting your own machine - it is however a little unusual to want your own (second) internet connection (and if you had in reality been a kid ... well there is usually a good reason for wanting total privacy - and good reason for parents not to allow it to happen)

as I see it here are your options - (given your dad's reluctance to spend money upgrading your level of service).

1 Buy yourself a laptop which has built in wireless connectivity - and buy your dad a wireless router for Xmas - (this is a win win option) - he connects by wire ... you connect wirelessly ... even a slow broadband connection should provide sufficient bandwidth for an average family (so long only one person at a time downloads any large files).

the second option is to have a second landline installed .... and get your own connection

the mobile option is getting cheaper all the time (you can even buy a "modem" which takes a sim
but it's capped unreasonably low unless you pay a lot extra

ACtheTROLL apology accepted!!
I think the idea of buying wireless for my dad for christmas is a great idea!! thanks for that!!
