I normally use Firefox as my browser and so all desktop icons (shortcuts) automatically start off in Firefox. However, is it possible to create one or two to start off in Internet Explorer ? I can start up IE, no problem, and then type in the address of the site I want to visit, but it would be quicker for me to use a shortcut instead. Any ideas anyone ? Thanks.

Why clutter up your desktop with shortcuts? Why not use the browser's bookmarks facility? That way you can separate your favourite sites into IE- and Firefox-friendly sites.

One of the advantages of Firefox is that you can organise your bookmarks into folders.
Right click on the desktop and select New > Shortcut from the context menu. This will bring up a Create Shortcut window. Where it says 'Type the location of the item' enter

"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe "

followed by the address of the site you want to visit.
(e.g. "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe " http://www.theanswerbank.co.uk).

The double-quotes are important - remember to leave them in. Click Next and give your new shortcut a name. Then click Finish.

Many thanks Plowter, I keep forgetting about the folders option in Bookmarks....

That's was exactly what I was looking for Brando.... Cheers !
You could also install the IE Tab add-on which enables you to render webpages using IE within the Firefox browser itself...

http://ietab.mozdev.org/

This enables you to switch the current page between IE and Firefox as well as setting specific pages to always be rendered as IE.
