Occasionally when I boot up, this "thing" appears on my desktop as a grey box headed "I am service!!!".

Despite regular full scans with Norton and AVG, it never gets picked up. However, it seems to be more of a nuisance than a problem.

Has anyone else come across this, and (how) did you get rid of it? Thanks

It's not a virus it's the Asus motherboard Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (and yes Cneter is how it's spelled).

To get rid of it:

Click Start then select Run...
In the Run dialog box type 'msconfig' and click OK.
You'll see the Windows Configuration utility.
Select the Startup tab. You'll see all the programs that load at startup.
Look for 'aaCenter.exe' and disable it by removing the check. Click the Apply button.

Changes should take effect next time you boot the PC.

Thanks guys, but I couldn't find it.

I'm running Vista Home Platinum.

Is it under 'Windows Defender'?
Sorry! Gave you instructions for XP, but Vista should be the same. If you can't find it in Startup then it may be running as a service rather than a program.

Not sure where you'd find it in Vista but under XP try
Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services
Look for Asus ACPI Center and disable it there.

You may have to go into the BIOS to disable the ACPI there.

If you know the make and model of your motherboard try the Asus Support Forums
