You don't say what OS you are using...for XP

Task bar icons on the left...or quick launch on the right...

If it's the task bar ones just right click and delete...quick launch ones go to Start/Run and type in: msconfig. Go to the Startup Tab and uncheck accordingly.

If you rightclick anywhere on the taskbar and look at the menu that pops up and follow the toolbars on top sub-menu. If desktop is ticked click it that will take all the icons off your taskbar that are also on your desktop.

The quick launch icons usually on the left.... have you tried sliding that thingymajig with dots along to the left? That reduces the quicklaunch icons to 3 plus an arrow to see the rest. You have to be careful to keep your mouse moving smoothly horizontally when moving those dividers on the taskbar, or else they jump all over the place except where you want them to go.
