Thanks to Norton Internet Security my computer is ridiculously slow.. but thats not the issue in hand.. my internet is also really slow.. in the utility tray(?).. thr are 2 icons of 2 computers (representing a connection i suppose) one has a cross as it is not connected, the other has a warning triangle, and when i roll over it it says Status: Limited or no connectivity.
When I take the option of repairing it, it sya I need a new IP address then tries to get one.. unsuccessfully each time.. Could this be cos i'm with aol which is a completely different explorer to the windows one?

Any help gratefully rec'd. Thnx

Right click on norton and disable it for a second. then right click the 2 computer icon and select repair. If it is successful, you will know that Norton is the culprit. My advice, Get rid of Norton. There are too many free programs out there to choose from that are just as effective as norton without all the problems. Norton is notorious for being a huge recource hog causing really poor performance on many computers that arent built to make up for what norton takes away from you. Dont forget to enable norton again if you still plan to use it. But NEVER go online with no security at all.

well I've now established that it's not norton to blame for the slow connection.. although now that it is uninstalled the computer is still ridiculously slow!!

anything else that could be affecting the connectivity?
I dont know what kind of programs you are using to rid your computer of junk but try this. Right click Internet Explorer on your desktop, select properties, select "delete files "and select "delete offline content". then in that same window, delete cookies. Then try a program called "Crap Cleaner" found Here and click the top right corner where the arrow is saying "download latest version". Install the program and run it. Click "run cleaner" and allow it to create a backup if it asks to. Then click "Issues" Scan for issues and once again let it create a backup. Select all found issues and Select "fix selected issues". Let me know if it helps you, there are more things to try.
Dont forget, you need some kind of antivirus and firewall before going online.
Are you running two anti viruses or firewalls at the same time have you left the windows xp firewall still running when you installed norton as 2 running together can conflict with themseleves and try to beat each other up.
